10-year-old spends birthday donating Legos to sick kids

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It is normal for a 10-year-old boy to want a lot of toys and gifts for his birthday. But for Jacen Phillips, it was about the Legos. Instead of keeping them for himself, he donated them to Covenant Children's.

When he was just two years old, he and his twin brother Nathan were patients at Covenant Children's. Nathan died then. Jacen wanted to do something in his memory.

"My friends don't give me presents, they usually just give me Legos," Phillips said.

Since his third birthday, the only thing on his wish-list has been Legos. On his special day, Jacen came by the hospital and dropped off the toys. It is an act that Stacy Frye said makes all the difference for these sick kids.

"Pretty much on a daily basis I feel like we get asked by different kids for Legos, have something in their room to do to sort of occupy their time let them be kids and do what they normally would do outside the hospital," Frye said.

While he does not remember much of his time at the hospital, Jacen knows it is important he does what he can now to help out other kids and honor his twin brother.

"It means a lot to me because it makes me feel really good," Jacen said.

His goal this year was to raise 100 Lego sets. He surpassed that, with 114 ready to be passed out to kids.
