LUBBOCK, Texas -

When Lubbock Fire Chief Lance Phelps retired last month, the question immediately became: Who will fill his shoes?

Their answer was made a couple weeks later: Someone who has spent the last 26 years fighting to keep Lubbock safe.

Dedicated to a life of service, Shaun Fogerson said he was born to be a firefighter.

"When I was very young, my mother says that was the first occupation I ever had. When you look up to firefighters, you respect them, you see the good work that they do and it never really left me," Fogerson said.

Born and raised in Lubbock, Fogerson joined the Marine Corps Reserve.

He then joined Lubbock Fire and Rescue in 1992, and worked from an entry-level position to operations, before moving into a leadership role.

"I plan to continue the good work of Chief Phelps and the chiefs before him, maintaining our coveted ISO Class 1 rating. Always looking at our processes and a process of continuous quality improvement, looking at how we can improve efficiencies," Fogerson said.

Despite 26 years of experience, Fogerson said he was speechless when he was named the new Lubbock fire chief.

"It was a surprise, in some respects, just because it's always been a dream and accomplishing your dream, no matter how hard you've worked, always is a little bit surprising," Fogerson said.

Fogerson said the challenges will be substantial, but with Lubbock firefighters' diligence to their purpose, he said he believes the best is ahead.

"We're going to continue to grow. We're going to continue to grow with the city and meet the challenges and the demands with the expansive rate of growth that's going on in the city of Lubbock right now, and that's a challenge we look forward to, and we're just ready to get going," Fogerson said.
