South Plains Food Bank to Hold 10th annual Summer of Sharing Food Drive

LUBBOCK, Texas -

(Press Release)

In an effort to provide relief to Lubbock area residents, this year the South Plains Food Bank will kick off its tenth annual Summer of Sharing Food Drive.

This event unites both local businesses and community members with the common goal of reducing food insecurity each Summer. For Lubbock, the Summer months mean fewer occupants, which, for the South Plains Food Bank translates to fewer volunteers, and fewer donations.

To combat this increased need, for the last decade the humanitarian organization has been engaging in what is called the Summer of Sharing Food Drive, an event that extends a helping hand to the nearly 30,000 area children
who often worry about where their next meal will come from once school lets out.

“Feeding the hungry and reducing a food insecurity on the South Plains is a community effort," said David Weaver, Chief Executive officer of South Plains Food Bank. “Our community volunteers and donors are key to the success of the food bank.”

Perhaps the biggest reason that the Summer of Sharing event has done so well over the last ten years is the involvement of our partners like Plains Capital Bank, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, West Texas Chevy Dealers, Covenant Health, and Lowe’s Supermarkets.

Their continued support of the campaign as well as their individual participation have created a platform that encourages community involvement and eliminates barriers within the Lubbock populace.

“Because of our sponsors we are able to provide food and hope for more than 58,000 individuals throughout the 20 counties we serve," Weaver said. “I can’t say, ‘Thank you!’ enough.”
