Commissioners approve fireworks sales, update progress on arena

You will be able to buy and shoot off fireworks in Lubbock County on Memorial Day.

Commissioners approved the holiday thanks to the wet weather in our region the past few weeks. The Commissioner's Court makes the decision on a  year-to-year basis. The only days when sales are usually permitted yearly are around New Year's and Independence Day.

Remember, this only applies outside city limits. You still cannot shoot off fireworks with city limits.

Expo Center plans moving forward

The Commissioner's Court has approved laying the legal ground work for the proposed Lubbock County Expo Center.

The County will work with a financial services adviser and a bond council to hammer out the details of a public-private partnership. They'll be working on how much bond money it will need, how it will be paid out and the partnership's organization.

Hilltop Securities will determine how to best handle the venue tax revenue bonds.

The Expo Center's steering committee intends to have the facility ready for the ABC Pro Rodeo in April 2021.

Highway renaming to honor Nelson

The Commissioners agreed to pay homage to former city councilman and elected judge David Nelson. We reported on this Sunday.

County Judge Curtis Parrish says Nelson was a great friend to Lubbock. And he served his hometown well.

The State Senate is expected to approve a name change for FM 41 later this week.

Widow Ainsley Nelson says this honor is one more way to promote safety across Texas.

"It's my job to continue his legacy and honor him every day," she said. "But I have to make sure it's in a meaningful way and that it's not just his name everywhere. We certainly want it to be in the right places and meaningful for the community."

She says the best way to honor David's memory is through service. If you want to continue his legacy, tell stories about him, volunteer and serve the city you love.
