Shallowater EMS Director claims hospital district mismanagement

Posted:

Shallowater's Director of EMS Services says the Lubbock County Hospital District is mismanaging its money and asking too much of the City of Shallowater.

Gary Vaughn told commissioners Monday the hospital district is unfairly asking for an additional $120,000 for medical care in northwest Lubbock County. He says this is a breach of the Texas Constitution, as the hospital district is not fulfilling its obligation to provide medical and indigent care.

"The hospital district's solution for us was to raise our taxes to pay for that service in our city," Vaughn said  "It's not just the residents of Shallowater. It's Lubbock County residents, and the city of Shallowater, last time I looked at a map, was in Lubbock County. So if it's going to be a county-wide service, it needs to be a county-wide service, and it needs to be funded."

Vaughn says, without a resolution, the City of Shallowater may be forced to sue the county.

County Judge Curtis Parrish says this is part of ongoing negotiations between the county, Shallowater and UMC.
