"Lego Movie 2" new on DVD, Blu-ray, download

Posted: Updated:

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" is the follow-up to the movie that launched a successful series of "Lego" films. It's one of several movies ready to watch at home this week.

Watch the video for the full review.

Like its Oscar-nominated song claimed, everything was awesome in "The Lego Movie" in 2014, overcoming naked commercialism with creativity. It also somehow walked the line between opposing messages of "think outside the box and do your own thing," but also "buy these Lego Movie sets with copious instructions!"

It was visually fresh, funny and genuinely touching with it's father-son reveal in the final act. So the problem with a sequel is, it's not going to be as fresh or surprising, but it's still pretty good.

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" is set five years later where the boy from the first movie has grown up a bit and become a little more dark and moody with a "Mad Max" style world. When several characters are taken away to the Sistar System, our hero Emmett, voiced again by Chris Pratt, has to go save them before "Our-Momma-geddon" comes. You can surely see where this is going.

Despite the predictability, there are some fun new characters including Rex Dangervest, also Chris Pratt, a combination of the actor's biggest movie roles (galaxy guardian, cowboy and raptor trainer).

One big way this new movie tries to be different is by being a musical with almost half a dozen numbers including "Catchy Song," flat-out telling the audience it will get stuck in your head.

Some of the jokes and gags are pretty on-the-nose like that, but there are also a lot of smart pop culture references and inside baseball asides - like why there are no Marvel characters, and there's one big celebrity cameo strictly for the adults.

Overall, this is an enjoyable follow-up, but nowhere near as memorable as the first "Lego Movie" or even "Lego Batman," for that matter. When do we get another one of those?
