LUBBOCK, Texas -
UPDATED: Police have identified the driver as 16-year-old Ivan Gutierrez.
A driver who, according to police, was speeding in a stolen vehicle, died in a crash early Friday morning on 50th Street near Detroit Avenue.
An officer was writing a report in a parking lot near 50th and Memphis when the officer saw a pickup driving recklessly eastbound. The officer tried to pull the truck over, but never got close enough.
A minute later, the officer drove up to the wreckage near Detroit Avenue. The driver lost control, crashed into a tree and utility pole on the south side of the street. The driver died.
Police report the pickup had been stolen but a report had not yet been made. Officers are working to identify the driver and notify next of kin.
