LUBBOCK, Texas -

14,000 kids across the South Plains have volunteered more than 300,000 hours in the last year.

To celebrate, the Volunteer Center of Lubbock hosted its 7th annual Service Luncheon to honor young volunteerism. Its Youth Connections Program helps build the next generation of leaders by giving them the training and support to lead service programs in their schools.

"We started our programming with youth several years ago because we believe that if young people have the opportunity to give back from an early age, then that's going to create a lifetime of service," Sharon Hyde-Bass, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, said. "We've been doing the programming long enough that we know that that's true. We see that happening, and so it's just great to get to be a part of such a positive thing."

Together, young volunteers throughout the South Plains have severed more than 300 organizations.
