TxDOT launches statewide 'Click it or Ticket' campaign

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Law enforcement will ticket more drivers who aren't wearing seatbelts, starting the middle of this month.

Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying by nearly half for people in the front seat of passenger cars, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Last year, more than 2,500 people died or suffered serious injuries from driving without a seatbelt.

With all of this in mind, Texas law enforcement officers will increase their efforts from May 21 to June 3 to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers, especially at night, as part of the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

"The majority of crashes that happen on state highways happen overnight or in the early morning hours so we want to make sure that people are not only buckling in when they're picking their kids up after school, but they're buckling in after they've been out on a night out on the town," Dianah Ascencio, TxDOT Lubbock Public Information Officer, said.

Texas law requires the driver and all passengers in a vehicle to be secured by a seat belt. Unbuckled drivers and passengers, even those in the back seat, face fines and court costs of up to $200.
