LUBBOCK, Texas -

Road closures will be expect on Loop 289 Sunday, April 28, for the Mayors Marathon.

The outer lanes will close around 5:15 a.m. All lanes are expected to open around 2:00 p.m. Chief Greg Stevens said there will be an increase in police presence and security.

Race Director Marty Grier said enrollment for the race is up 35 percent from last year. Grier is expecting around 1,300 runners, one of them Mayor Dan Pope.

"I hope to compete in my age group in the old man's category, but it would be my goal to beat Councilman Massengale," Mayor Pope said. "He's been training quite a bit and Tech basketball got in the way of my training this year, but I will finish, I can tell you that."
