LUBBOCK, Texas -

Congressman Jodey Arrington said he hopes to put West Texas values front and center in his new position on the House Committee of Ways and Means.

"This gives greater voice to West Texas, to our values, and to our interests and to our priorities and that's the question I always ask when opportunities arise, will this, will this elevate the influence of West Texas and the answer is a resounding yes," Arrington said.

He is the first West Texas legislator to serve on the committee since Kent Hance in the '80s.

"Jodey Arrington being named to the Ways and Means Committee is huge," Hance said. "It's great for him but it is great for this area."

The Ways and Means Committee is considered to be the most powerful in Congress. It focuses on bills that raise revenue, it deals with taxes and trade.

"He is on the most powerful committee in congress now," Hance said. "That's the committee that 75 to 80 percent of all legislation that passes Congress goes through that committee."

Arrington said with his new position he fills a void of Ag based representation which he hope will lead to better deals for producers across the country.

"I think the good news is people see West Texas as the food, fuel and fiber capital of this country and it's what I represent that probably brings the most to the table when it comes to appointments like this," Arrington said.

He fills one of the three open spots. He vacates his seat on the Agriculture Committee which he sought after being elected.
