Arrington: 'Disingenuous' Democrats decline meeting on funding bill

Posted: Updated:

The House has rejected another Democratic bill to re-open the government.

After a meeting with President Trump, Republican lawmakers are urging Democratic leaders to negotiate. The White House invited rank-and-file Democrats, in an attempt to by-pass Speaker Nancy Peolosi. But the members declined to attend.

Among those who did is Lubbock's Republican Congressman Jodey Arrington.

"Seems to me pretty disingenuous when you have already voted on it, when you are the beneficiary of that security and you won't even meet the President halfway," Arrington said. "You won't even get one counteroffer? Save and accept a one dollar, off-the-cuff comment that is really just petty and it's a reflection I think of the political pettiness of the other side."

The Democratic chair of the House Appropriations Committee says the Left's proposals to re-open the government would end the shutdown, while allowing time for bipartisan talks on border security.

House and Ways Appointment

Republican Party leaders have given Arrington another influential assignment. He will serve on the House Ways and Means Committee.

During the last congress he served on the Ag Committee, the committee assignment he wanted when he won election.

Arrington says the new committee placement will help expand the political clout of West Texas.

"This gives greater voice to West Texas, to our values, and to our interests and to our priorities," Arrington said. "And that's the question I always ask when opportunities arise. 'Will his elevate the influence of West Texas?', and the answer is a resounding yes."

Arrington's appointment fills one of three vacant spots. He says one of his top priorities is cutting down the national debt, which he calls one of our greatest threats to national security.
