LUBBOCK, Texas -

Chip Darden is the next Lubbock-Cooper High School football coach.

He's no stranger to the Pirates. He's been at the district ten years. Darden served as offensive coordinator last four seasons.

Darden succeeds Max Kattwinkel stepped down as football coach to become full-time athletic director.

"I'm so thankful for this incredible opportunity," Darden said in a news release from the district. "We have an exceptional program and staff, and the most supportive community we could ask for. I look forward to building on to this team that has become known for performance and leadership on and off the field."

Last season the Pirates set a school record for wins in a season, most in 82 years. Lubbock-Cooper was undefeated through three rounds of the playoffs, before a December loss in the regional finals.
