NWS Employees Organization worried about shutdown

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

In Lubbock one of the departments affected by the partial government shutdown, and likely to miss checks, is the National Weather Service.

Bill Hopkins is vice president of the NWS Employees Organization. He says the lapse in funding is affecting more than just workers. It can affect the forecasts, as well.

"All the data going into the models, if it's not there, it impacts whats going to come out of the model," Hopkins said. "It could cause us to miss some disturbances in the atmosphere that we might not see where as with the upper-air soundings, it would be picked up."

Hopkins says the forecasters at NWS offices are continuing to work diligently, but with no guarantees of pay.
