Number of Texans over 65 expected to double by 2030

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A silver tsunami is rapidly approaching. The baby boomer generation is retiring, and the rate of Texans over 65 will double by 2030.

Lubbock has sixteen long term care facilities, and with the jump in residents, the services will need an upgrade. Billy Jewell, the president of 24 Karat Ventures, says it needs more staffers. The more care-givers these facilities can train, the better.

"There are people out there who are very caring and want to work in a field where they can take care of somebody and have a rewarding job. They can get trained for this field," Jewell said.

Jewell said with a few changes to the bureaucracy, nurses can be back in the workforce.

"I've had to create jobs to hire nurses to be dedicated to doing paperwork. Those jobs, if we can reduce some of that paperwork and red tape, then those nurses can be back in the work force," Jewell said.

Jewell expects this to be discussed in the upcoming legislative session.

"We'll be able to start the conversations and try to work towards a way where we can partner with the state and help the individuals and nursing homes who are willing to and want to," Jewell said.

Lawmakers gavel in Tuesday. The Texas Health Care Association projects there will be more than three million more Texans over 65 in 2030.
