Very cold next few days, freezing drizzle possible Tue night

LUBBOCK, Texas -

THIS AFTERNOON: It's warmed into the mid 50s with lots of sun across the South Plains. But don't let it fool you. Very cold air is not far away. It'll move in and stay a while. At 3:30 this afternoon it's 55 in Lubbock, 37 Amarillo with teens across parts of Kansas.

Here is the current temperature and wind chill (wind chill will only display readings 40 or below):

local temp forecast

wind chill

TONIGHT: It'll turn much colder and breezy. Temperature near 26 at Midnight, NE wind up to around 20mph pushing the wind chill to the mid to lower teens. Low temp near 18, wind chill single digits. North of Lubbock wind chill should drop below zero.

TUESDAY: Cold, cloudy day with the NE wind gusty early, dropping off some through the afternoon. High 27.

There is a chance for some freezing drizzle Tuesday evening. While it shouldn't be much, there may be a few icy patches on roads Wednesday morning.

WEDNESDAY: It'll stay cold, high only in the upper 20s. Cloudy day with a chance for some light snow through the day lingering into early Thursday. There also could be some freezing drizzle through that time. Once again, possibility for a few icy patches on roads.

LOOKING AHEAD: The temperature should finally climb above freezing by mid-day Thursday. We've obviously had some cold snaps already past few months, but this will be an extended stretch below freezing. Make sure preparations are made for this "extra" cold. While we could get some wintry precipitation, it doesn't appear to be a lot. The temperature will be the bigger issue.

The sky will clear, with more sun Thursday afternoon and again Friday through Sunday. The weekend will be warmer. There may be some showers in the region early next week.

7-day forecast

TRAVEL OUTLOOK: There's a lot of snow on the ground to our west, especially around Ruidoso. That's from what fell a few days ago. Now the next winter storm is moving across New Mexico. Winter storm warning for Albuquerque and much of the state runs through late tomorrow night.

Heaviest snow amounts should be in the northern mountains, but much of the state will likely have some travel issues.

Farther to our east, Tuesday night into Wednesday some wintry mix is likely from near San Angelo to Abilene and east to just west of Fort Worth. There may be some travel problems in this area Wednesday.

Have a great rest of your day and Happy New Year! Bobby will have an updated forecast posted here early tomorrow.
