Ending 2018 mild, frigid temperatures to start 2019

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Clear and cold this morning with a breezy westerly wind.

TODAY: Temperatures milder than the weekend with the high near 55. Sunny, the wind staying breezy early in the day backing to 5-15mph and changing northerly this afternoon. This changing wind is from a cold front pushing through the area.

2018-2019: Plan on dressing warm if you are going out tonight. Temperatures will be in the 20s at midnight with a breezy northeast wind 10-18mph. This will make it feel much colder with wind chills in lower teens. Clouds will also be increasing tonight with a few snow flurries possible near the Texas/ New Mexico border.

NEW YEARS DAY: Highs will stay below freezing at 28 degrees. Partly sunny with the northeast wind continuing 10-15mph. Very frigid as wind chills will range from -5° to 5°. The coldest air we have had this season so far.

EXTENDED: Very cold temperatures lasting through early Thursday. The chance for snow will increase Wednesday and continue into the early parts of Thursday. For now amounts are looking light with most locations less than an inch. We will have warmer temperatures with more sunshine by this weekend.

Have a great New Years Eve! Stay safe and warm if planning on being out tonight. Matt will have the next update tonight on the News at Nine.
