LUBBOCK, Texas -

Veteran support organizations in Lubbock are getting a national ally. Remember Our Heroes partners with Woody's Mission to unveil the Monument of Courage.

Woody's Mission is named after medal of honor recipient Marine Woody Williams. Woody's Mission works to honor gold star families, the exact reason support organizations around the area are building the monument.

It also commemorates purple heart recipients and the three medal of honor recipients from our region.

"Their families actually tell us how their family, how their loved one, lived. And it's a great connection because it helps both of us heal. And we can't allow ever anybody to forget the sacrifices of these brave men and women," Benny Guerrero, Command Veterans of Foreign Wars, said. "So, the Monument of Courage it gives us that. It links us, who actually came off the battlefield, in one piece and some of us injured, and to connect with our gold star families who lost a loved one in combat."

Donations can be made to the monument of courage project, including in honor of another veteran.
