Lovington, NM -

A Lea County District Court jury found Oscar Zamora-Martinez, 21, guilty of two counts of homicide by vehicle caused by recklessness, one count of child abuse and one count of vehicles entering a stop or yield intersection.

On April 23, 2016, Joseph, 26, and Tymplaire Wier, 20 were traveling eastbound on Avenue D when their vehicle was struck by a truck being driven by Zamora-Martinez. Zamora-Martinez disregarded the stop sign and entered the intersection at approximately 50 to 60 mph.

His juvenile brother was a passenger in the vehicle during the incident. Zamora-Martinez claimed his brakes failed, but numerous tests conducted by Lovington detectives showed the brakes were operational, even after the crash.

Zamora-Martinez faces a maximum term in prison up to 15 years. He will be sentenced at a later date.
