Defense attorneys request new bond for Michael Dixon

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Defense attorneys for Thomas Michael Dixon ask the seventh court of appeals in Amarillo to set a new bond for the formerly convicted killer.

That court overturned Dixon's capital murder conviction last week, ruling some evidence was improperly gathered. Dixon was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Doctor Joseph Sonnier in Lubbock. Prosecutors say Dixon paid David Shepard to kill the victim over a romantic rivalry.

At the time of the investigation a warrant wasn't used to obtain Dixon's cell phone location data. The Supreme Court ruled this year in a separate case there must be a warrant to obtain that kind of data.

In their filing, Dixon's attorneys ask for a $100,00 bond, citing his good record on prior release and assurances he'll attend court.
