Nathaniel Jouett to be sentenced as an adult

CLOVIS, New Mexico -

Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that Judge James Hudson has ruled that Nathaniel Jouett, 17, of Clovis, NM is not eligible for an amenability hearing.

In his 33 page order filed on Dec. 17, Judge Hudson stated that Jouett is not denied Equal Protection under the law and that Due Process has not been violated by his ruling.

Jouett’s defense attorney, Stephen Taylor, had filed a motion asking the Court to conduct a hearing and to find Jouett amenable to treatment. This would have allowed Jouett to enter a rehabilitation facility and be released at age 21. In the Court’s order, the amenability hearing is denied and Jouett will be sentenced as an adult.

On Oct. 17 Jouett entered a guilty plea to all charges stemming from the mass shooting that occurred on Aug. 28, 2017, at the Clovis Carver Public Library.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for one week in Clovis beginning Feb. 11, 2019. At that hearing, Judge Hudson, will have full discretion as to the sentence, which could range from probation up to two life sentences plus 96 years.
