Open Door receives $60,000 donation in fight to end chronic homelessness

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Open Door partners with All State Fence & Supply to fight chronic homelessness in Lubbock.

The ministry announces a new initiative through the month of December. Every dollar donated will be matched, up to $30,000, to help house homeless people.

Open Door has moved 40 people off the streets since 2017, which has halved chronic homelessness.

"We're happy to report that that accounts for a savings of over a million dollars in taxpayer money. When we move people from homelessness into housing, they're no longer needing public resources, like shelter, emergency care, emergency services, a lot of those are significantly reduced when people move into housing. So it's not only something that's good, but it's actually working smarter not harder in our community," Executive Director Chad Wheeler said.

Wheeler hopes to end chronic homelessness in Lubbock by 2020.
