LUBBOCK, Texas -

Waters Elementary 2nd grade teacher, Stephany McDougal was honored with an award for teaching patriotism in her classroom.

McDougal is the winner of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award out of four counties.

"Everything that she's done, that's on her resume is just absolutely superior and we were so proud to get this nomination and right now it blew through district and it's at the department of Texas for judging," Amos Hastings, VFW Post Quarter Master, said.

Members of the VFW said her submission was so impressive, it's moved on to the next round where it will be judged by a panel from 39 other counties.

"It's such a great honor especially for my family who has all been in the military just me carrying on what they have done and talking about their stories, it really, it really is a great honor," McDougal said.

If McDougal wins the next round her submission will advance onto the national competition.
