Slaton Volunteers bring an early Christmas for those in need

SLATON, Texas -

There is only a little more than a week to go before Christmas but first responders and other volunteers in Slaton, TX took on the role of the man in red to help those who would otherwise not have many presents under the Christmas tree.

Teams went around town Saturday morning delivering turkey, toys and other holiday essentials. In total they knocked on more than 150 family's doors.

"All this money was 100 percent donated by the community," said Chief Trevor Barnes, Slaton Police Dept. "There was no tax dollars involved in this. It's all 100 percent donated. On the back of my t-shirt it says because Slaton cares and that's why we're doing this."

The event brought dozens of people out all with one thing in mind, getting in the giving spirit.

"Kids get wrapped up in unwrapping gifts and getting toys and telling Santa what they want as opposed to giving back to everybody else and there's more to gain by giving back than to receive," Barnes said.

All the toys were donated through the help of Toys for Tots. Food was provided by the South Plains Food Bank and through other donations.
