Final game at Lubbock Coliseum Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Ranked 11th in the AP Poll, Texas Tech men's basketball will host Abilene Christian Saturday in the last game ever at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.

The Board of Regents approved the budget to demolish the complex, with the Lubbock County Expo Center project set to replace it.

After the game demolition crews will start asbestos abatement before April's ABC Pro Rodeo.

A triple-header will be the University's send-off. Both current and former head coaches say it will honor its service.

"I think everyone in town has a memory here with this coliseum," Coach Chris Beard said. "Whether you're a basketball fan or maybe not so much. I think it's more than a basketball game, it's one final time to pay respect to everything that has happened in this building. Basketball being one of those things."

Gerald Myers was basketball coach from 1971 to 1991 and athletics director from 1996 to 2011.

"Coaching is a job and I looked forward to it every day," Myers said. "Coming into work, getting a team ready, recruiting or whatever it was. All of that took place right here in this building for me."

The Auditorium Coliseum will be razed in April. The board is hoping to have a grass space in place by the fall.
