Distillation plant installed at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech's engineering department now has a new teaching tool. A new distillation plant is being installed, funded by a $1.3 million donation from Morrow Energy in Midland.

The plant mimics part of an oil refinery and gives students hands-on learning, operating and controlling industrial-size equipment.

"The biggest challenges right now is... you're in school and you get an internship and you go out and they teach you the basic stuff that the engineers don't want to do that day," said Morrow Energy project manager Paul Rogers. "But being able to come here and say 'oh, I already know why that won't work or how this needs to be run,' will put them automatically a step ahead of anyone else."

Tech is one of the only universities in the country that offers real-world chemical engineering training.
