No snow day for Santa Cops; how LPD is spreading Christmas cheer

LUBBOCK, Texas -

While the weather outside was frightful Saturday, it could not stop Lubbock Police officers from doing some Christmas shopping for children in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

"I get to do all these fun things like getting shoes and getting books and more other fun stuff," said Treyson Durham, 10.

Treyson is one of those selected for this years Santa Cops. It is an effort to provide children with Christmas gifts that would not otherwise receive them.

"I've gotten some Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, lots of them, and I'm getting some Under Armor shoes and Nike shoes," he said.

Tino Blanco is one of the officers who braved the conditions to go shopping.

"They are actually pretty grateful about it," Blanco said. "They see that the community is putting their own time and some of their money aside to help them do these kinds of things and they're grateful for it. They've been actually enjoying it and they're kind of surprised that hey people are there to help us, that's kind of nice for that kind of thing."

For the kids like Durham the efforts mean a lot.

"It feels really good to know that someone could pick me because usually I don't get to do all of this," Durham said.

Before it was all said and done, there was one more surprise, a brand new bike for each kid. The bikes were provided by Yates Flooring Center.
