'Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit' is in full effect

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock Police Department and the Lubbock Sheriff Office announced the creation of the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit which aims to investigate and combat crime more efficiently throughout the county. This new LMSCU will be comprised of officers and deputies focusing specifically on violent crime. City council and county commissioners approved the proposal citing a steady rise.

Sheriff Kelly Rowe and Chief Greg Stevens agree that the metropolitan special crimes unit will advance their mandate of both reducing and preventing crime. The unit will have a specific case load and won't focus on lesser crime.

"Anytime there is an apparent homicide, a suspicious death or a death from causes unknown that occurs again in Lubbock county or in the city of Lubbock," said Stevens. "Any child deaths, any followup that needs to be done on suicides, accidental deaths, or natural deaths, officer involved shootings, or in-custody deaths."

Stevens said very often when a body is found out on a county road a homicide has occurred often that individual has been murdered inside the city limits which then causes challenges by one agency, when it has occurred in a different jurisdiction. Implementing this joint effort, should eliminate that challenge.

"It is comprised of a Lubbock police lieutenant that will be the commander of the unit," said Stevens. "It will have an LPD supervisor, and it will have investigators, detectives from the police department, as well as the sheriffs office and it will be supported by forensics ID people from both the LSO and the LPD."

The LMSCU will also investigate unsolved cases and re-investigate anything deemed necessary by either the sheriff or the police chief. The Texas Anti-Gang Unit has shown great success for both agencies since its inception, Rowe and Stevens believe this new unit will have a similar outcome.
