UPDATED: Levelland police find missing newborn, mother arrested

Posted: Updated:

The Levelland Police Department along with the Texas Rangers have safely returned a missing infant and arrested the biological mother.

Levelland Police Detectives received information about the possible location of the infant in the Lubbock area and were able to locate the infant in good condition, but the mother was not found.

Lubbock Police responded to the 200 block of Ave O where the mother, Maria Barrientez, was found and arrested for the outstanding kidnapping warrant and was transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center.

The Texas Rangers joined the Levelland Police Department Friday to begin the hunt for a woman they report kidnapped her baby on Nov. 23.

Investigators issued a warrant for Maria Barrientez's arrest Friday, according to the Levelland News-Press. Child Protective Services removed Jaylee Deleon from Barrientez last Wednesday after both mother and child tested positive for methamphetamines and opium.

CPS placed the child with her paternal grandmother, but investigators report Barrientez went to that home last Friday and took the girl while her grandmother was out of the room.

Police report no vehicle in the escape, and Barrientez entered the home barefoot. She has ties to Pueblo and Greeley, as well as Colorado and Clovis, New Mexico. Jaylee is listed as missing and endangered.

If you know where Barrientez or Deleon are, call Levelland police immediately at (806) 894-6164, or call 911.
