Open Door pastor spends night on streets to bring attention to homelessness

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Every night hundreds of people around Lubbock are wondering where they are going to lay their head down to sleep.

Homelessness is a problem the people behind Open Door are trying to tackle but it is a constant struggle. In order to bring attention to that struggle, Executive Director and one of the pastors at Open Door, Chad Wheeler decided to spend the night on the streets in hopes people will donate to the cause on Giving Tuesday.

Every two hours he provided updates on his situation, answering questions about what it is like to not have a home.

"Most people when they think about homelessness they think about the cold weather, somebody's out they're going to freeze to death and the reality is, most people that's not what they talk about as their primary concern," Wheeler said. "They talk about the fear of something happening to them, of somebody coming up to them and hurting them in the middle of the night whatever it might be. It's just constant survivor mentality of what am I going to do next? What am I going to eat next, where am I going to sleep? Am I going to be safe tonight and that really wears on someone over time."

Wheeler was not trying to act like he was homeless rather in hopes more people will be willing to donate and give to agencies like Open Door.

"You know I woke up with a creak in my neck and definitely a little bit sore but inside I am more enthusiastic than ever about doing something to help our neighbors on the streets."

So far Open Door has helped move 40 people off the streets permanently, with a 100 percent retention rate.

If you would like to donate, you can do so online or at any United Supermarkets. You can also drop supplies like personal hygiene products, gloves, jackets, socks or a monetary donation by Open Door (1916 13th Street).
