Operation Turkey Drop: Lubbock Sheriff's Office helping feed families for Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

While Thanksgiving is for family, friends, and food, some are food insecure this holiday season.

The Lubbock Sheriff's Office has identified nine families in the county, providing each a thanksgiving meal through its first "Operation Turkey Drop."

"Throughout this year, our patrol deputies and other deputies have identified families in need, and we are providing a Thanksgiving meal to several families in the county," Lt. Anthony Castillo said.

The rate of food insecurity in Lubbock is 15.5 percent, nearly two percent higher than the national average, according to Feeding America.

Castillo said the hardest part is knowing this project will not give every family a Thanksgiving meal.

"There are a lot of families in need. I wish we could help every family out there, but we're trying to connect with the families in a positive manner and we just want to do something good for some people," Castillo said.

He said the goal is to make that happen in the next couple of years, when the project is up and running.

"This is our first year, so it's fairly small. We have lots of families in need and we do want to grow in the coming years, so I don't know what our actual goals will be for next year as far as numbers go, but we're hoping we can grow at least double the amount of people we serve next year," Castillo said.

Castillo added an important aspect of the turkey drop is to help break down the barrier between law enforcement and citizens.

"This is just something we want to do and want to grow on for the years to come. We're hoping this will help build some relationships with Lubbock County and citizens outside the city," Castillo said.
