Bonnen says he has votes for TX House Speaker

Posted: Updated:

Democrats picked up 12 seats in the Texas House. While it may not be enough to make any real change, it could have an effect on the race for house speaker.

A candidate needs 76 votes to be elected speaker. Republicans have 83.

Monday was the first day for filing bills for the session that begins in January. Some that stand out:

  • A proposal to outlaw making or selling unmarked firearms
  • Expanding the conditions that qualify for medical marijuana use
  • Adding stricter penalties for hazing
  • Fixes for the foster care and public finance systems

The Republican Caucus has a meeting December 1 to set policy priorities and potentially rally behind a single speaker candidates. Angleton Rep. Dennis Bonnen says he has 109 votes for that position.

"All 149 other members are going to be a part of this House, whether their name is on the list today or not is unimportant," Bonnen said. "We are going to be the House. When the House stands together, it does great things, and this Texas House is going to do great things."

He has support from Governor Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and former House speaker Joe Straus. The session begins January 8.
