Happy State Bank robber sentenced to federal prison

LUBBOCK, Texas -

U.S. Senior District Judge Sam Cummings sentenced a confessed bank robber to more than four years in federal prison Friday.

Eddie Estuardo Galindo-Mendez, 44, pleaded guilty to a single bank robbery charge in July. The Guatemalan migrant used a pipe bomb to rob Happy State Bank at 19th and Quaker in November 2017. He planted a decoy bomb on the Texas Tech campus earlier in the day to distract the SWAT team and bomb squads. Then, he went to the bank, handed a note to a teller indicating he wanted money from the till, and placed what looked like a pipe bomb on the counter, suggesting it was live.

Mendez escaped with the cash on a bicycle, eluding law enforcement until March.

After his prison sentence, Mendez will be under supervision for three years. Along with all the normal restrictions, he can't drink, must undergo mental health treatment, must hand over all his financial information to a probation officer, and must pay more than $2,500 in restitution to the bank.  He's also barred from using credit without approval from his probation officer.
