Chilly weekend, snow likely early Monday

LUBBOCK, Texas -

THIS AFTERNOON: It's a sunny, cool day with the temperature near 50. Don't expect any warm weather any time soon. It'll be cold for the football games tonight, temp near 40 by 9:30 tonight.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy, low 32. Wind SSE 5-10.

TOMORROW: A mix of sun and clouds through the day, staying chilly. High near 50, gusty SW wind 12-22mph.

It'll be cold for the Texas Tech game. Kickoff mid 40s, end of the game lower 40s. The south wind won't be as strong as earlier in the day, but still at times up to 18mph in the first half. The wind chill will be in the 30s late in the game.

SUNDAY: It'll warm to the mid 50s in Lubbock, a little warmer south. This will happen mid-day, before a powerful cold front moves across the region. It'll turn windy and much colder by Sunday evening.

SNOW CHANCE: An upper-level disturbance moving across the region brings a pretty good chance for precipitation first in NE New Mexico Sunday evening, then around Lubbock and the South Plains early Monday morning. Initially there may be some rain, but it looks like this will time out for a quick change to snow. Snow in our area should be winding down late morning into mid-day Monday.

It's still a few days out and this will likely be refined a bit. We're forecasting anywhere from a dusting to 2" of snow around the area. Farther northwest, there's potential for 2" to 4" of snow.

This is a fairly strong disturbance. Although it won't snow for long, there could be some heavier bands that produce isolated heavier amounts.

So at least with the data we have now, this doesn't appear to be a major snow. But since it's happening Monday morning, just a light accumulation could be enough to cause problems on the roadways.

Monday afternoon the temperature should only reach the mid 30s, followed by a hard freeze Tuesday morning. Rest of next week it'll be sunny with a slow climb on the temp.

7-day forecast

Be sure to check back with us through the weekend as we get more specific on the forecast. Have a great weekend and Guns Up! for Texas Tech.
