Young Republicans betting on strong youth vote

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

During early voting, a record 66,370 people voted in Lubbock County, shattering the previous midterm totals.

Across Texas it is a similar story with the young adult vote up more than 500 percent.

Many political scientists believe this vote is going to the Democrats. However Republicans believe they are going red.

Paul Callaghan with the Texas Tech Young Conservatives is betting more of these young people are voting conservative.

"I've seen more students and members get involved with block walking getting involved with political candidates and campaigns and I just think they're really scared and concerned for the ongoing of this country, Callaghan said.

His colleague, Anna Holland, said it is going to have an impact on this election.

"In this election so many millennials are voting that I think conservatives will really shine and get out to vote and especially since Texas is going to be red. It always is," Holland said.

Callaghan said it really boils down to students falling back on their Texas values.

"I think more people are going to come out for Ted Cruz just in fear of all the different changing Texas aspects on the Democratic side," he said.

One of those voting for Cruz, Evan Geist.

"He supports my values, he supports Texas values. He's keeping the guns, cutting taxes, bringing jobs to Texas," Geist said. "We need to be taking care of ourselves and taking care of each other not having the government in that role."

The latest polls still show Cruz is leading O'Rourke slightly. Election Day is Tuesday, polls are open from 7 a.m. 7 p.m.
