Record voter turnout could strengthen Lubbock Democratic candidates

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Democrats up and down the ballot are cautiously optimistic about their chances of winning. Naturally for this area recent polls still favor Republicans, but not by much. Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Beto O'Rourke's senate race is credited with the surge in voter turnout state-wide. Other candidates hope this will have a trickle-down effect on overall state representation.

"The ongoing conversation is the more people who get out and vote the better chances that Democrats have, said Drew Landry, Democratic candidate for Texas House District 83. "And that may be true for a lot of other parts of the state. So we are very confident in the top of the ticket driving people to vote that wouldn't normally vote."

This election cycle is different than past ones with a majority of seats in both state and U.S. races being contested.

"We have a ground game this year and it is not only our campaign," said Samantha Carrillo Fields, Democratic candidate for State House District 84. "It's Beto's campaign, it's Miguel's campaign it's all of the Democratic campaigns. They have people on the ground knocking doors like they are supposed to."

One of the biggest challenges most Democrats face is down ballot roll-off, but campaigning alongside Congressman Beto O'Rourke has definitely helped. What will make Lubbock Democrats successful all comes down to voter turnout.

"We have to make sure that our key supporters are getting our message out to those that may not be sure about who to vote for down ballot," Landry said. "We have to constantly make sure that those main supporters get out to vote and take someone with them so that is number one for us turnout, turnout, turnout."

The last day to early vote is Friday. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
