Veterans Helping Veterans: New monthly business networking opportunity emerges for Lubbock-area veterans

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

A new business networking event will now be held each month for veterans, by veterans, as veteran-owned businesses across Lubbock are helping other veterans find resources to start their own business and thrive after service.

The first event, held at Savage Tavern Monday night, was an introductory meeting to kick off the message and set up future events.

Mike Jones, a Navy veteran and Lubbock business owner said he helped create this event to help veterans find a future in business after getting their discharge paperwork.

"I really felt there was a need for veterans to understand that there is a lot out there that they don't know, and who to ask those questions to as far as the business realm goes," Jones said.

He said the goal is to make the transition into the private sector as smooth as possible.

"The idea is to get a core of established business professionals. There are a lot of veteran-owned businesses in Lubbock, a lot of people doing good things, and I think that if we can get enough of these people together, then we can provide that value to the veterans and help them to make that transition from military to civilian life," Jones said.

Jones said he started his business without opportunities like this, as he struggled to find a starting point.

"It was just trial by fire and learning on the job kind of stuff. So hopefully, with the mistakes I've made in that area, I can help out some other veterans along the way and pointing them towards resources on how to not make the same mistakes we made," Jones said.

He said he hopes to make these chances to network more accessible and to make it easier to start a business.

"A lot of times, it's the simple matter of the veteran doesn't even know that these things are available. It's a case of you don't know what you don't know, and hopefully we can put some veterans in touch with some resources that they didn't know about," Jones said.

Jones said one of the unique aspects of this event is veterans giving advice to other veterans.

"You get a group of veterans together and there's no wall between us. It's not like a lot of social situations where you go in for the first time and there's all these people you don't know, so you put up your wall and your mask, and it takes a while to get comfortable," Jones said.
