LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Berl Huffman Athletic Complex is getting a much needed makeover after 38 years of being untouched and uncared for. The multi-million dollar investment is coming directly from property tax funds approved by city council. City councilwoman Latrelle Joy said the repairs are long over due.

"Our citizens deserve better this was built in 1980 and really we haven't done anything to it," said Joy. "It is time and I appreciate that Market Lubbock saw it as an opportunity to increase tourism and improve the economy."

The renovations include a new irrigation system, synthetic turf on several fields, new lighting fixtures for night games, an additional parking lot with a road that leads into Loop 289, and new restrooms. The investment is expected to draw in more revenue for the city.

"This investment into these soccer fields is going to allow us to capture and grow not only the number of visitors that we have coming to our community," said John Osborne, with Market Lubbock. "But also make this even a better place to live than it already is so that people want to live here that want to work here and also want to play here."

The Lubbock Economic Development Alliance will be paying three million dollars this year and four more next fiscal year. Market Lubbock is funding and managing certain parts with help from city staffers.
