Record turnout for midterm elections in Lubbock County

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

9,106 voters cast a ballot Tuesday which nears the Lubbock County single day early voting record of 9,191 set Monday.

Voters were waiting in lines that occasionally stretched outside.

It is a trend across the state spurred on by the Ted Cruz, Beto O'Rourke Senate race.

"We definitely have an energized base of Ted Cruz voters and I think that is what's really driving the numbers up," said Steve Evans, the Lubbock Co. Republican Chair. "I'm encouraged that this many people are getting out to vote."

These large numbers may not necessarily mean a good thing for Republicans though.

"I think the conventional wisdom is any time in a midterm election you're seeing a big turnout and especially given the public opinion polls now with kind of large numbers of job disapproval ratings for Trump coupled with a very active challenger in a Senate race you'd think it breaks Democratic," said Tim Nokken, Chair of the Political Science Dept. at Texas Tech.

He said there is a think in that conventional thinking called the Trump effect.

"He's clearly a polarizing figure and I think when we see changes in the dynamics, changes in the kind of interests and participation that it's impossible not to chalk it up to kind of the way the president has changed the political landscape the last couple years," Nokken said.

That gives Evans confidence Sen. Cruz will be re-elected.

"I think that the base and the truly the Trump is there, you're just starting to see it show up now. It's answering the 'Make America Great Again' call and answering the red wave," Evans said.

Both Election Administrator Dorothy Kennedy and Nokken expect the voter turnout to remain high, potentially nearing presidential levels at times.

The last day to early vote is Nov. 2nd, with Election Day on Nov. 6th.
