INTERVIEW: Frullo says work on Tech vet school, school finance will continue

LUBBOCK, Texas -

State Representative John Frullo (R-District 84) is running for re-election in November, challenged by Democrat Samantha Carrillo Fields. Looking ahead at an eighth year in the Legislature, Frullo said he's willing to continue working with senior leadership on statewide priorities.

A guest on the News@Nine Wednesday, Frullo said there's no true solution for public school finance but he's open to working on solutions that do not involve raising property tax rates for school districts.

"I think over the last several years," Frullo said, "we've seen how what the state is paying in is decreasing as a percentage. We need to look at that, and I think that has to be changed. The state needs to come up -- we've got to take some of the burden off the local taxpayers.

"I haven't met anybody that says they're not paying enough in property taxes," he concluded.

Frullo said there are many pressing issues facing legislators, each one of them important to the lawmakers those issues affect; Frullo listed hurricane relief, health care, school safety, and infrastructure.

"If you look up in Amarillo, we have two chairmen in the House -- Chairman [John] Smithee and Chairman [Four] Price," Frullo said. "Go down to San Angelo, Chairman [Drew] Darby down there. So, we're able to do a lot more work together, get together and get things done for this area."

Frullo said he will continue the 50-year push for a Texas Tech vet school, and calls the forced retirement of former Chancellor Robert Duncan a "black cloud in Tech's history."
