INTERVIEW: Levario wants guaranteed health care, comprehensive immigration reform

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Democratic candidate Miguel Levario is running against Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) in the November election. A guest on the News@Nine Monday, Levario said his "grassroots" campaign is focused on people over party, and he's confident he can unseat the incumbent Republican.

Levario said health care and immigration are the two biggest issues facing the House of Representatives. For health care, Levario said he favors a guaranteed health care system, but did not specify whether that would be a "Medicaid for All"-type single-payer system. He blames Republicans for their efforts to gut the Affordable Care Act without having a viable replacement ready to implement.

"People are really sick and tired of our current system and seeing it get more and more expensive," Levario said, "and are opening up other options for guaranteed health care."

Levario, a history professor at Texas Tech focusing in border studies, said the country needs a complete immigration overhaul, specifically a multi-angled approach to address the different problems facing the nation's border states.

"Border security, immigration, and the smuggling of illicit goods are three different issues," he said, "and can't have a one-size-fits-all solution. We need to use facts and evidence to pursue a solution to these issues."

Levario's full interview is at the top of this story. You can watch Rep. Arrington's interview the next day here.

Early voting begins Oct. 22; Election Day is Nov. 6.
