LUBBOCK, Texas -

Former city councilman TJ Patterson is honored for his work in Lubbock and the Texas Tech community.

He's the recipient of the Senator Robert L. Duncan Community Champion Award. It's part of the University's Celebrate Diversity banquet.

Each year the university's Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion recognizes those who exemplify inclusive excellence.

While Patterson could not attend, his daughter, Avis Patterson, accepted the award on his behalf.

"It's an honor for him," Avis Patterson said. "He's done a lot for the community, a lot for this city. And as he's getting older sometimes, with age, you feel kinda left out and not needed. So for him to be recognized for this award is very, very heartwarming for him."

The banquet also featured Republican strategist Ana Navarro, celebrating her work representing Hispanic service and political organizations.
