COLD START: Lubbock recorded a freeze 16 days before the average first 32-degree reading. The low at the airport was 32, one degree shy of the daily record low.
All of our area had a cold start. Here are some lower readings from the Texas Tech Mesonet:
Dora NM 28
Denver City 31
Reese Center 31
Near Texas Tech 32
New Home 32
Roaring Springs 32
Since then it's stayed cold, beneath a mostly cloudy sky and a steady N/NE wind. In fact, nearly all of Texas has some clouds overhead this afternoon with lots of rain over the southern 2/3rds. There's been more sun over the far northern Panhandle. That part of the state got a little bit of snow last night into this morning. Here is the current temperature:
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy and cold. Because the clouds will be in place, it'll be one thing working against a freeze. Low in Lubbock near 33, freeze north and west of the city. Slight chance for some drizzle or light rain.
TOMORROW: Cloudy and cool with a chance for some light rain or drizzle. It won't add up to much where rain does fall. While we can't rule out some freezing drizzle farther northwest of Lubbock, it mainly looks like just rain or drizzle for the most part.
Clouds should break earlier to the northeast, leading to a warmer afternoon from Silverton to Paducah, in the 50s. In Lubbock we expect a high near 49, wind N 10-15mph. It'll be a few degrees cooler to the SW.
NEXT FEW DAYS: An upper-level low will be parked over the SW United States, helping keep clouds in place here. A better disturbance to produce rain should slide across our region Wednesday night into Thursday, bumping the rain chance up to about 30% to 40%. The rain looks fairly light.
Average high this time of year is in the mid 70s. Afternoons will only make the 50s Wednesday and Thursday, with a high in the mid 60s Friday.
By the weekend more sun is expected, high in the 60s Saturday and Sunday.
Next week looks warmer, but definitely not warm or hot. High most days will probably be in the 60s next week.
Have a great rest of the day. Bobby will have a full update to the forecast here early tomorrow.
