Lubbock middle schoolers get creative in Makers Space

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It is a new way of learning that is fostering a creative environment for middle schoolers at Cavazos Middle School.

"You get to make anything you want, pretzels, pizzas, and you get to have a lot of fun with other kids that come here as well to play with you," said Ariadna Morales, 12.

Students like Morales are utilizing Cavazos' new Makers Space program.

"It's one of my favorite things to do in the library once I come here," she said.

The program is a result of an idea by the librarians who were wanting to give kids an outlet and be creative without any oversight.

"For students to be able to come and explore and just not have someone tell them exactly what they're supposed to learn right then and there but just able to learn on their own by exploring and getting their hands on something," said Rachel White, one of the librarians at Cavazos.

Principal Marti Makuta said the program fosters creativity which helps how they perform in the classroom.

"Hands on is always something that's engaging and our students need more of that," Makuta said. "They need to be able to use their hands and see what they can make and what they can create so they really enjoy having the opportunity explore their own ideas."

Children have access to a variety of arts and crafts and even old computers which they can take apart to see how they work.

"It's been really fun and we're hoping really soon to have an after school program start up so more kids can get to come in and have time to work with stuff," White said.

Makuta said they will need donations to help expand and make the after school program happen.

You can bring donations to the school.
