Rain likely this weekend, freeze for much of area next week

LUBBOCK, Texas -

COOL DAY: The clouds have kept it cool today. In fact, the temperature dropped to 55 at the airport at 11 last night and stayed below that mark until 3 this afternoon. It's a much different picture farther east, with sunshine and the temperature near 70 at TCU ahead of tonight's Texas Tech game.

GAME DAY FORECAST: Nice and clear with dry air and not much wind for TCU and Texas Tech. Kickoff in the upper 60s dropping to the lower 60s late.

TONIGHT IN LUBBOCK: Cloudy with a steady temperature, or it may rise a few degrees, with mid 50s to start Friday morning, cloudy.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy, high near 73. There's a low chance for a shower or storm during the day. Then, a better chance for rain late Friday night.

For the Friday night football games, temp near 70 at 6:30 dropping to the lower 60s by the end of the games. There is a slight chance for rain during the evening. Thankfully, the chance for lightning is even lower. It doesn't look like we'll have the mess of a schedule like we did last week.

WEEKEND: Rain is likely Saturday as the remnants of Hurricane Sergio move across the region.

Sergio forecast track

Some heavy rain is possible. A thunderstorm is possible Saturday, but most of it should be just rain. High in the mid 60s Saturday, breezy at times.

The rain chance is a little bit lower Sunday, high in the mid 50s, cloudy. A cold front will move through during the day, kicking up the N/NE wind.

NEXT WEEK: Computer models continue to trend colder for early next week. Since we're still a few days out, there's a bit of uncertainty on just how much colder it'll get.

We still have a chance for showers on Monday. The clouds may prevent the temperature from bottoming out Monday morning. The sky will probably be clearer Tuesday. Even with the clouds, we're forecasting a low in the mid 30s in Lubbock Monday morning. A freeze is likely for areas northwest of Lubbock. Farther north, some light snow is possible around Amarillo and the Panhandle Monday.

Then on Tuesday morning we expect a freeze for much of the area, including Lubbock.

As for the afternoons...Monday will likely stay in the 40s, with a gradual warming trend through next week. It'll stay well below the average high of the mid 70s.

7-day forecast

Have a great rest of your day and Guns Up for Tech. Bobby will have a full update to the forecast posted here early tomorrow.
