(Press Release)

The Hobbs Fire Department’s Fire Combat Challenge Team is moving on to the U.S. Nationals after competing in Carlsbad on Saturday and Sunday, September 22nd and 23rd! After a year’s worth of training and competitions, team practices twice a week, and fundraising to afford their travels and competition costs, the Combat Team’s hard work is paying off.

The team placed in second place in the Team and Relay categories with Firefighter Jordan Headley and Driver Engineer Rodney Smith making the Top 10 as Individuals and Smith earning First Overall!

On moving on to the U.S. National and World Challenges, Team Captain Richard “Rico” Rendon shared, “The whole team has been so dedicated to this cause. We’ve held car washes, cookouts, anything to raise funds and keep ourselves self-sufficient. We always work hard at the team practices we have twice a week. At these practices, we all discuss the planning for our future competitions and build team camaraderie. It’s really a blessing for Chief Gomez and the City of Hobbs to support us in this. We are looking forward to representing Hobbs at the Nationals in Missouri and California!” An interesting fact is that Chief Gomez was a former member of the Hobbs Fire Combat Challenge Team and placed several times individually as well as with his team.

The U.S. Nationals are this week from October 4th-7th in Branson, Missouri, and the World Challenge is in Sacramento, California October 22nd-27th.
