Communities in Schools of the South Plains awarded $1.5 million grant

Communities In Schools of the South Plains has been awarded a highly competitive $1.5 million, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Cycle 10, federal grant administered by the Texas Education Agency. Communities In Schools of the South Plains is one of 38 entities throughout the state of Texas to be selected to receive this grant for the next three years.

The mission of Communities In Schools of the South Plains is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Also called Texas Afterschool Centers on Education, or Texas ACE, the 21st Century grant is designed to offer academic enrichment activities during non-school hours for students identified as having risk factors that make them more likely to drop out of school.

The program helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children. The school districts to receive Communities In Schools of the South Plains’ services under this grant award are Hale Center, Lorenzo, New Deal, Roosevelt, Shallowater, and Slaton. The funds along with Communities In Schools of the South Plains’ partnership with the Levelland ISD Texas ACE program will impact thousands of students per year. The programs are free for participants.

Kenna West, Chief Executive Officer of Communities In Schools of the South Plains stated, “We are thrilled about receiving this grant which will allow us to bring our services to so many students in our area! The Communities In Schools ACE program provides a safe place for students before and after school when parents are typically working.  We’ve seen tremendous benefits within communities that have received these services before and are so excited for the districts involved.”
