Coronado HS teacher, cartoonist arrested, accused of sexual contact with minor

LUBBOCK, Texas -

An art teacher at Coronado High School who told investigators students call him their "art dad" has been arrested, accused of having a sexual relationship with a student who is a minor, a state felony.

Scott Hall, 40, is in the Lubbock County Detention Center as of Wednesday, held on a $100,000 bond.

Late Wednesday the feds announced Hall is also charged with enticement and attempted enticement of a minor student. If convicted, the federal charges bring a potential sentence of up to life in prison.

An arrest warrant identifies e-mails, texts and other messages implicating the suspect.

NOTE: There are disturbing details below.

When a detective and special agent arrived at school Monday, Scott told them he knew why there were there, according to the warrant. Scott told investigators he and his wife had looked after the student because of a difficult situation with one of her parents. The student admitted to her mother the relationship became sexual in August, according to the warrant.

Police began investigating after the mother reported the relationship. The mother showed investigators messages she received from Hall after she asked him to never have contact with her daughter again. According to the warrant, Hall replied "I let my care for her cross the line. It was a mistake to hurt the two of you...I never wanted to hurt anybody. It was misguided affection...I will do anything you ask to keep this from being a legal or professional situation. I will truly do anything at all. I am not a predator, and this has never happened nor will it again. I promise with everything that I am."

The mother showed an exchange of e-mails between the suspect and victim that, according to the warrant, was the suspect apologizing to the minor for an argument the night prior, ending with "I love you my dear".

Another e-mail Hall allegedly sent to the victim: “I love touching you. One of these days, we are going to spend hours watching movies and rolling around in bed.”

While speaking with the detective and special agent, the warrant shows Scott confirmed the e-mail exchanges and that "all of this is his fault" and that he knows he cannot have a relationship with the student again.

According to a statement from Lubbock ISD, the district was made aware Monday of an investigation Lubbock Police began Sunday. The district then placed Hall on administrative leave.

Charges were filed against Hall Wednesday morning. Lubbock ISD will notify the state board of educator certification Wednesday, according to the statement.

Hall graduated from Texas Tech and has published sports cartoons in the Lubbock A-J in the style of legendary artist Dirk West. The A-J reports on its website Hall is not and has never been an employee of the A-J, though he did contract work. The publisher wrote Hall's cartoon publications are suspended, pending the outcome of this case.  One of his recent published cartoons is below:

Hall started working at Lubbock ISD in August 2017. A bio online for Hall for an educator conference last year notes his artwork includes sculptures and jewelry that has been displayed in churches, businesses and other venues as well as Tech's art school Landmark Gallery.
