LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board grants Texas Tech's Burkhart center $475,000 to host autism training across the state.

Melanie Teague, with the Burkhart Center, said this will expand the College of Education's autism training workshop series.

"This one will actually differ in that we are able to take this training out to the education service centers throughout the state of Texas," Teague said. "There's 20 different locations. We're looking to partner with some of those so that we'll be able to take them out. We'll be doing 10 trainings per year, so we're looking to reach as many teachers as we can in those areas."

These training sessions will focus on functional behavior assessments, then use that data to design and evaluate intervention programs for students on the autism spectrum.

It will also teach how to prepare individualized and supportive behavior plans.
