UPDATE: Peggy Sue dies at 78, memorial services scheduled

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Update: A celebration of life for Peggy Sue Gerron will take place Saturday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held at the Lakeridge Chapel located at 82nd Street and Iola. 

It is open to the public. 


Peggy Sue Gerron, the namesake of the song that vaulted Buddy Holly’s singing career, has passed away at a Lubbock hospital. She was 78.  

According to her biography, she was born in 1940, in Olton and grew up in Lubbock. Her name became synonymous with Holly and his band The Crickets after the release of the hit song "Peggy Sue." 

She was a celebrity speaker, radio host and helped lead efforts in the development of the Buddy Holly Center.  

She also supported awareness and prevention of domestic violence and drug abuse.  Gerron was a spokesperson for the U.S. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. 

Services have not been set at this time.
